Bought a 1981 center console last year. Owner said engine was an Evinrude 225hp but didn't know the year. Motor has no Evinrude logos on it. There is no model or serial number anywhere on the motor. I did some research and believed it to be a 1988 Evinrude but just recently read that Evinrude V6's after 1983 had the VRO system. This motor does not have the VRO and I am mixing oil with the gas. Would be great to find out exactly what year this big motor is for parts ordering and just to know. Is there anything I can look at on the engine that would be an indication of the year?

On the engine block there is a plug that is about the size of a quater with numbers and letters stamped on it.

The number on the heads is 333809-4. These heads were used on Johnson/Evinrude 185-200-225 HP Looper engines 1988-1992 models. But I read that after 1983 these had the VRO system. This engine does not have that so it's a bit confusing here.

Trying to order a couple of new thermostats for it but seems like there are a lot of selections and not knowing the year makes it worse. Did order a starter solenoid yesterday from iboats for a 1988 225hp. I should be ok with that I think.
