Evinrude 25hp 1985 gearbox removal

Trying to remove the gearbox from my 25hp Evinrude, 4 side bolts are out, 1 rear bolt is out but there is still resistance from the shaft, when the shift lever is moved the gearbox raises and lowers showing me the shaft is connected.

I know there or I am pretty sure there is going to be a shaft link I need to undo to let the gearbox come away cleanly.

I have ordered a manual for the engine but was hoping to get the job done over the weekend.

Could someone direct me to the place to look please?

Remove the water intake screens. Use two wrenches to seperate the shift linkage nuts, turning only the top nut. Do not turn the lower nut, or your shift linkage length will be changed.
Once disconnected, grab the upper nut with a pair of pliers and slide it up the shaft. Remove the plastic cone shaped keeper that was under the nut. The keeper has a slit in it that you can seperate with your finger nail or small screw driver. Shift the motor in forward and remove the upper nut. Reassemble in reverse. Hope you get it done for this weekend...

Forgot to mention. Keep a couple of the gearbox bolts barely threaded in, so the gearbox wont fall.

This thread was really helpful. I forgot to remove the nut from the grear shift, and made a mare of it. Now the driveshaft is out of the gearbox. Guess this means re-build the gearbox?

If the main shaft has came out, then you will have to remove impeller housing to get it all back in right. If that is what your stating? ANd during reassembly, dont forget the keyway that spins impeller or you will be back at this again. Post back results.

yes, this is what happened. I'm ordering a full impellor kit, as well as diveshaft seal to gearbox. Phew, I could see this little mission turning into a major!
The key is the one that sits into the driveshaft, and locates impellor, right?
