Does a 1991 30 HP have an alternator built in? If so where are the conections out to the battery? It is a pull start.
I know it is a dumb question but I dont have a service manual yet and was curious.
Lee

Depends Lee.....electric starts from the factory usually have a charging system. Rope starts generally do not. Could you post the model number? We can tell from that.

well, I believe if an outboard has electric start then there should be some type of charging system, but if it only has a pull start system then no there wouldn't be an alternator.
javsam

Gotta love this forum, ask a question and get an answer faster than if you sat on the phone to the factory.
Here is mod number E30REIC Sn R08619280.
I heard that kits are avilible to rig on up, any truth to that>
Thanks again,
Lee

Evenrude 30hp, rope start, 1991.

No charging on that model. Yes the kits are available for charging. PN 175271....runs around $90 new from a John/Rude dealer. Sets you up for charging including lead to the battery.

On occasion you can find these things on ebay cheaper than new.

If you think $ 90 is much, a used stator from an electric start and a rectifier from ebay might do the trick for a third. I've had two rope start, actually the one had a charging system, the other had a AC light generator ( could be modified to charging by just adding a rectifier ) If you have an outlet just nex to fuel plug on side of motor, or 3 yellow wires running from below stator to the electric connector bar on starboard of motor, under cowling, you have at least light gen.

Re: Evinrude 30 HP alternator? Dumb question

Resurrecting an old (old!) thread here in the hopes that someone might be able to help me as well...

I have a similar '91 Evinrude 30 hp motor, but with the electric start. I just bought the boat (a 12' Avon RIB) and it came with a dinky little dead motorcycle battery.

I bought a new Group 24 marine battery for it, but when I got home, found that it would not fit in the storage area under the factory seat console! I'm now puzzled as to which battery to buy that will 1) fit, and 2) turn over this motor.

I've used "U-1" batteries in the past for other applications and think that one would fit, but I'm not sure if they are up to the task of starting this motor, since IIRC, they are usually "deep cycle" batteries used for wheel chairs and electric scooters...

Any help would be most welcome.

Thanks!

-Brent
