I just bought an old boat with a late 80s Evinrude 30 HP on it. It has been siting for a little while.
My question is should I pay a shp 2 to 300 to tweeek it or do it myself with a manual? If I remember right the 1 carb 2 cycle engins are pretty easy to work on.
I dont believe there should be any difficulty in getting parts.
Any input?
Lee

Welcome to the forum.

How long is a little while ?

If you dont have a service manual for the motor, first get one, it will be the best $ you spend on it. They are available thru this site, click on the manual link in the upper left corner of this site.

If you do not know when waterpump impeller was changed, and it wasnt within the last year, I would suggest you to start there. I would highly recommend you to remove, disassemble carb, soak overnight in carb cleaner, and install a fresh rebuild kit. Change lower unit oil, and install a fresh set of plugs. Follow steps in manual, for doing a carb/ignition sync'linck syncronisation, and you are good to go.

If you are mechanically inclined, DIY service is easy.

Either way you should get an original service manual (and if possible a parts manual). After market manuals are just too vauge.

If you are mechanically inclined, have the book, and a local parts supply ... go for it.If your time is limited, having it done is not a bad thing.

Probably going to need a carb rebuild, fuel system clean, and a water pump replacement (don't look at the impeller, replace it while you have it apart).

It's a bit late now that you bought it,but do a spark, compression and fuel sample test before you're in up to you ears.

DHP

Re: Evinrude 30 HP question

Thanks for the info. I figured even if the motor is for crap I got a 16 foot Smokercraft Alaskan and a EZ load roller trailer and the engin for 900 bucks. I think all are 1989 year. THe boat is a ways a way so I cant walk out and get the serial/modle numbers.
Thanks again.
Lee
