Evinrude 33 won't shut off!

I'm a novice with outboards, just got ahold of a 1969 Evinrude 33hp. Rebuilt the carb and got it running nice, but it won't shut off when I turn the key off. Any ideas?

Also, I'm confused about the cooling water intake. There is a screen just below the exhaust port, but it is capped. How does this work? Where does the cooling water come back out? Should it be visible when running the engine in a pail of water? Thanks!

the motor needs to be submerged 1/2way up the leg. the screen is on the under side of the exhaust, not the end. water should come out the exhaust relief ports on the back on the motor, and thru the exhaust. under water. you could have wrong switch, or a broken kill wire.

Thanks for the reply. Where on the engine is the kill wire located? Does it work by sending power somewhere or by grounding out?

Re: Evinrude 33 won't shut off!

The ignition system on that model is a magneto setup. There are two black wires leading from the armature plate (plate the points, condensers, etc attach to). Each black wire attaches to one set of points.

These black wires lead to the ignition switch. One black wire attaches to one of the ignition switch's "M" terminals, with the remaining black wire attaching to the remaining "M" terminal.

Key in OFF posiiton = "M" terminals connected (ignition shorted out)

Key in ON position = "M" terminals NOT connected (ignition engaged)

Use an ohm meter to find either a broken wire of wire not connected.
