Hi guys and gals

I have this evinrude 35 electric start cdi ignition of 1981 vintage but the ignition switch that came with the motor was busted so I have got a replacement from a marine yard in Florida.On the back of the ignition switch there are poles marked B,M,A,C,S,M.What I would like to know is how to connect the wiring harness to these terminals.The wires are red(heavy)black,black and white,yellow and yellow and red any help appreciated.

Also I have reason to think the soleniod might be busted as when it is connected to a good battery crossing the side terminals has no effect on the starter motor.I have tested the starter motor direct and it is OK.Does this mean that the solenoid has gone west??

All help is really appreciated.

cheers LLB ;)

Re: Evinrude 35 hp 1981 model

Hello LLB

The side terminals require 12 volts from the ignition switch to activate the solenoid.

Generally, wires go like this:

A = purple +12V to Accessories;
B = solid red or orange 12V from Battery positive terminal;
C = red w/white strip = Choke;
M = both black wires (to Kill switch);
S = white 12 volts positive (to starter solenoid side terminal).

Check the wires, though to make sure they are used as stated above.

A is very limited, usually used only for gauges and sometimes running lights.

Lubo, to trip the solenoid, short the large + cable from the where it connects to the solenoid, to the small terminal right next to it (the other side small terminal goes to ground through the neutral/start safety switch). That will energize the solenoid if it works.

Make sure you've tucked in your necktie before doing this.

Re: Evinrude 35 hp 1981 model

I have now checked the wiring and as I suspected there were a few wires that had broke down inside the plastic sheathing.I have cut these out and soldered in new wires in their place.I have now found that there is no spark and I was wondering if any of you guys know how to go about testing the CDI unit of this engine.I have a multimeter so I can do OHMS tests I just need to know the order and wiring colours to test.All help would be appreciated.

Rapair posts a troubleshooting guide for their systems here: CDI Troubleshooting Gude

There is a pretty good essay on CDI bench tests here: CDI Testing

Also, make sure that your power pack is not grounded by the kill switch, neutral switch, etc. You might want to disconnect the black/yellow wire and see, but be prepared to find a way to stop the motor if it starts.

Also, Rapair provides a parts cross reference for the CDI systems here: CDI cross reference
