i bought an old starcraft years ago with a '76 evinrude 35 long shaft on it that i just recently brought home from storage. i can't get it running although i haven't really taken anything apart yet - don't know if i wanted to go down that route.

i just recently traded off some stuff and received a '74 evinrude 40 short shaft that runs decently in return. if i wanted to use this one i'd have to change it to a long shaft. the 40 is huge compared to the 35 and has the old school mount that won't accept through-tube steering cable. can the mount from the 35 be used?

can i/should i

a) throw the 40 onto the 35 shaft/mount
b)extend the 40 shaft
c)get the 35 running and sell the 40 or use it for parts
d)other suggestions

thanks! this forum is pretty great and i've learned alot just by searching what i need!

Two totally different designs. The 40 has a lot more torque, the 35 has a more efficient gearcase and propeller design. You cannot swap parts to create a 37.5. My dad owned both, they each had their charms, but I like thru hub exhaust, so the 35

Yep, the 76 and newer 35 was a completely different design the to earlier 40. The 74 40 was based on the old 33hp SkiTwin which was also based on the '57 35. Your model 35 is a completely newer style design and the 25 follwed the newer design in the following year.

Yep, unfortunately, my collection won't fit in my sig :D:D I'm a big fan of the oldies.

If I was you. I would find out what is keeping your 35 from running. These motors aren't that tough to work on. I'm betting that you will need a carb rebuild and possibly a new fuel pump. The ignition system is electronic and likely is fine.

Well, those 40's are great motors. I actually like the model that you have. It still has the old style ignition and it has the older style midsection and lower unit. Excellent old motors and very reliable. It's actually a better motor than the 35 and cheaper to fix, if something goes wrong. Coils and ignition parts are cheap and all the other maintenance items are too.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to keep your 35 as a spare and liesurely get it running good.

Well, if you want to sneak a motor past the wife, wait till she goes off with the girls.
