Please excuse my ignorance! is it OK to take the battery out of boat to do work etc; or better to keep it in line fully charged? my boat came with new maintanence free battery which sits in a kind of milk crate thing, not secured by anything at all? how should the battery be fitted? in a purpose made box with cover secured to floor? or say secured directly to floor as in a car with clamps? also is car type fuses (bayonet or blade fuses) ok for wiring in the bilge pump or to eliminate joints solder everything and don't use spade connectors etc;? should I run with 2 batteries? many thanks for any help JBD.

Re: Evinrude 40Hp 1991 year,

In the U.S. a covered battery box secured to the floor is required by Coast Guard regs. A reasonable requirement to keep the battery & acid in place.
Battery can be removed, just don't run the engine with it out or you risk frying the charging system .
I run with 1 battery. 2 is okay, but proper battery switch is a good idea. The charging system may not be able to keep both charged.
It only has a 4 amp unregulated system.

Re: Evinrude 40Hp 1991 year,

Many thanks ED for your kind reply,I just didn't like the thought of somthing like a battery blowing around in the breeze, and strain being put on the terminals when it continually moves, also the bare terminals are another bad thing, (short)I will check my local caravan dealer to see if they supply battery boxes? If you read this again, can I check charging by putting multi-meter accross battery when engine is running? thanks again from Bonnie Scotland, JBD

Re: Evinrude 40Hp 1991 year,

Sure can. It should be at least about 14.5 volts to charge the battery & will probably go much higher at full speed.
At idle & low speed you might not get much of a reading.

Re: Evinrude 40Hp 1991 year,

many thanks again ED for information, this engine starts very easy and I intend to run it at least one a week in fresh water tank instead of wintering it which I think will be better for it? so will put meter accross it but your info on idle and low speed is great help, thanks again, great help, J.B.D.
