My engine has 11/3/4 by 17, it puts my 14ft speedboat on plane in seconds but runs out about 32mph on GPS, would a change of pitch help top speed or leave alone? Lurcher.

No one here can help without some additional information. Need the rpm's at WOT. I would think that 32 mph with a 40hp isn't too bad but without knowing your rpm's we can't help you put the motor into the proper operating rpm range.

Having owned that exact engine in the past and having had it installed on two boats (16 and 17 foot walleye boats) I can assure you the prop you have is optimum for that engine. A 12-1/4 x 15 is a fairly common prop for that motor and 11-3/4 -17 can be used depending on the boat size and load. Either prop puts the engine well into the mid 5000 RPM range which is proper for that engine. However, additiion of a tach (if you don't have one) would indicate if that prop is correct. If the engine can't reach the mid 5000 RPM range that prop has too much pitch.

Is the course pitch the reason for it lifting boat with ease? as soon as I apply small amount of power the bow points to heavens but another small amount lifts her onto plain, I purchased genuine OMC Tacho some weeks ago but have not ran it as yet, some people have told me prop is to small? thanks for help Lurcher

Get that tach going and let us know your max rpm and speed. Also what material is prop made of (aluminum etc)You may be able to improve performance by fine tuning the setup.

Since the engine is on a 14 footer -- and probably light hull, you may be able to add another couple inches of pitch. Those 40 HP motors had pretty good grunt for their displacement so a 19P might work well. Remember, adding pitch may help speed but affects hole shot. Less pitch helps hole shot but decreases speed. Happiness is somewhere in between. You need some WOT tach readings to confirm what you have and what you need.
