Howdy,

Im from Germany and cant find any help on this over here, so maybe you guys can give me some hints? Heres the problem:
I got me a new boat (nice little Lami 440RX) with a 40hp Evinrude VRO at its stern- the motor seems to be ok, but I cant tilt it upwards since the small cable that leads from this plastic handle down to the release- valve of the damper-cylinder is missing! Any idea where I could get such a cable with all the necessary nuts and so on? Looks like nobody has something like that over here, but before I start designing something by myself to operate that valve I wanna give it a try over in the US....
Ah- I dont know the exact year of that motor, but I think this tilt- device shouldnt be so different over the years shouldnt it?
Will post another topic related to this VRO system right away, so if anyone is familiar with these motors he should also answer that, please?

many greetings, and, by the way, this is a great forum, Im already in for 3 hours now and Im reading and learning and reading and learning and.....

greetings,
Rotti

Rotti, post the serial number and model number and someone can tell you what year it is and then can go from there.

Hi Rotti...

As Spinner suggested, a Model Number would be a big help. You can find it on a plate that is attached to the transom bracket. The plate also gives the Serial Number but all we need is the Model. Thanks....and welcome to the forum.

Hi again-

thats my problem folks- there is no small plate at that bracket, or better: there is a plate with nothing printed or stamped on!!! So I dont have any f.... idea where to look else for a number?! The motor is in dark blue, but as far as I know colours were never a good mark for identifying older rudes.....
I have already worked out something by myself, not too good, but at least I can now tilt the motor down from inboards after Ive sliped the boat! bringing it up again from in the boat is still impossible- another question: Is this damper cylinder meant to support tilting upwards as well? Then there´s definetly something wrong with my gear, short before breaking my back every time I bring this sucker up....

greetings,
Rotti

Nothing to do? Go buy a boat!

rotti,

Look on one of core (freeze) plugs on the block. Sometimes the model and serial numbers are stamped into one of them.

Ok,
so I carefully inspected the complete motor, heres something like a number that Ive found, it was stamped in the transom- bracket on the starboard side: "186477" and underneath that "17FN2" maybe one of you experts can tell me if this is something like a serialnumber or not- its the only number I can come up with for sure!
Would be great to know the year of that engine....

Rotti

Nothing to do? Go buy a boat!

Ok, here's what you've got. 1989 was the first year of a "new" trim system called "touch trim" by OMC. To call this a pathetic attempt at making and designing a good way to tilt and trim up or down your outboard is WAY... to nice. I think OMC had it about three years or so before they gave up due to 1) customers who HATED to use it. 2) dealers who HATED to continually fix it and 3) it was much cheaper to go back to a electric trim and tile system, which DID work!. (I would bet OMC spent zxillions of dollars trying to get it to work correctly, and no-one liked it when it DID work correctly) OMC made two versions, a tiller model where the cable is longer as the "release lever" is located up on the tiller arm and a shorter version where the "release lever' is located on the starboard clamp bracket. The longer cable retails for about $102.00 (US) and the shorter cable retails for $65.00 (US). The cylinder assembly is about $300.00 (US). You need to make friends with a OMC/BOMB dealer. He will have a lenghty six page (or so) service bulletin on the proper way to install/troubleshoot/repair this system. You cannot retro-fit a different system without spending big bucks..... If anyone dares say I'm bashing OMC on this point, they have never tried to fix one, and contend with the upset customers who have spent time and money on this sad excuse of a trim system. When ever a motor with Touch-trim comes into my shop, I'm always surprised IF it works!! (Which isn't often!!!)It can be fixed (hopefully it will last).I just installed one this last November and the customer tried to use it for the first time this last week, guess what?? The outer sheathing on the outside of the cable came off and the stainless wires inside where all caty-wampass!! The guy never used it after it left my shop. Bomb said, "Well, Yea, we had a couple do that!!"Replace it and it's covered under warranty!". Anyway, that's what you've got!! Touch-trim. Get the bulletin!! Read and learn! Good luck!!!!

Thanks P.V.

if these prices are real also over here, Il stick to my improvisation- it costed about 4,-$ and Ive used a couple of parts from my local bicycle-dealer! One last question: There are only few holes to trim the motor in a conventional way- is this system meant to be used to fine-trim the motor? Can this oil-cylinder take the force of a runnnig and therefore thrusting outboard?
Greetings and many thanks again,
Rotti

rotti, yes, the system, when working correctly, will hold the motor at any specific "trim angle" you desire. You release the valve, the cylinder goes up or down to the angle you desire, and you re-lock it at the desired angle, continue on....

Re: Evinrude 40hp VRO manual tilt again- nobody know´s something?!

Hi P.V.,

thanks for your clear answer! So finally my system isnt broken completly because the basic function of holding the motor when the valve is shut works! Ive just re- designed the cable with the device that works the valve (Ive used a brake-lever from a bicycle that clamps nicely over the main tilt-axle of the motor!)
Is there any maintenance necessary on that (stupid) system for example: Do I have to change or refill the oil inside?

Rotti
