I'm not sure what happened last night when I posted my question, but the message under my header wasn't what I sent. Must have been a chip fart somewhere along the line.

I'm looking at a pontoon boat that the dealer was going to let me drive the other day when the chift mechanism gave up. He's called and said he is installing a 1995 Evinrude 48 special motor on it.

I understand it's a motor I have to mix the oil and gas which is fine with me, but I was wondering if there are some opinions on this motor and it's qualities, etc.

My past experience has been with inboards and and Volvo Penta I/O's so this is a new game for me.

Re: Evinrude 48 Special

Great little motors and very reliable. As long as the dealer installs a prop that will push the pontoon along you should not have any problems. Those motors are 50:1 gas to oil ratio (one pint quality 2 stroke TCW-3 oil to 6 gallons of regular grade gas ---don't use gas that contains alcohol)

Good luck w/it

Bob

Re: Evinrude 48 Special

Thanks Bob. What recomendation do you have for the brand of oil to use? I'm sure that's like asking Ford or Chevy :)

I'm not sure what prop he has on it, but will go for a test drive next week so we'll see. I'm hoping he's using a stainless steel prop since the motor that is coming off the tracker had one and that was part of our negotiating price.
