As many of you already know my engine only backfires out the exhaust and will not start. Anyway to check/set the timing with the engine not running? Thanks again for your help and your patience.

George,You shouldn't do new posts on the same motor you can bump your post up with your new problem/Q it's impossible to keep track of the process of your motor.
That said, you really need to be working from a manual
there is a timing procedure in the carbutor section.and there is a testing procedure in the ignition section.these are both too involved to deal with here.If you can't afford a manual you may find one at the library. You'll need to get a card but no cost and they usually can order a book if they don't have one.You can order aftermarket manuals right here,amazon.com,or even at NAPA auto parts.I got mine off eBay.2 "Intertec" manuals covering many brands one under 30 hp and one over 30 hp.69-89.These were close to new.
about $30 for the pair including postage.I have seven manuals mostly to help here I like giving folks a hand
here it's a kick when they solve their problem.
Be sure to keep us updated with your progress and any further questions.

Re: Evinrude 48 spl (1989) ignition timing

Spike,
Thank you for the advice about "bump". I apologize for not knowing and doing that. Right now I have a manual by Clymer which covers several years & models of Evinrude. All of the procedures refer to timing the engine only with it running. I think I'll have to buy the factory manual. Anyway, again many thanks!

The manuals won't say anything about timing when not running, as you have found out. I suppose you could get some kind of idea where it is firing while cranking, but the specs would be by guess and by golly.

Actually, any engine should spark right around top dead center, give or take a hair before or after when starting. Now if you can figure out when yours is doing it?

Re: Evinrude 48 spl (1989) ignition timing

Have you checked the flywheel to make sure the key has not sheared or partially sheared. The key locates the flywheel in the proper relationship to the crankshaft and hence timing cannot get drastically out of spec unless someone has messed with the advance linkage. Those specs are covered in the link & sync procedure in the Clymer manual. Those adjustments are done with the engine stopped using a ruler. The manual covers multiple engines to be sure -- all you need to do is follow the procedure for "your" engine. which are 40 & 50 HP and the Jet. Follow that procedure to the letter. Once the engine is running, you can check idle timing and you will need a test prop or dunk the boat in the lake, left on the trailer, and then check the wide open throttle timing.

Re: Evinrude 48 spl (1989) ignition timing

The flywheel key is not sheared. It turns the crank even when I turn the engine by and. All I found in the Clymer book is the adjustment for the Throttle cam follower & wide open throttle stop adjustment. The maximum spark advance adjustment has to be done when engine is running. When I crank it over it either backfires or does nothing, but crank, and once in awhile it binds up like a car engine with the timing is off. ?????:'(

Re: Evinrude 48 spl (1989) ignition timing

bump: I shot some WD40 into the cylinders and ran the pistons up and down w/o plugs. Now there is no binding, but the best I get is a back fire. All wiring is ciorrect. The fuel previously had so much water I could not smell anything. I pump out (w/ the primer bulb) about 1/2 the tank til I got strong fuel odor. Then I installed a water separator fuel filter. Still backfires and will not start. What is the best way to drain all gas out of the tank (maybe I should say fastest way). Will bad gas make the engine backfire out the exhaust. I think #1's piston rings are stuck because I get 120/lbs on # 1 cylinder and 150 on cylinder# 2. I am determined to get this engine running.
Thanks again,
