Can anyone confirm advise me where the cooling water is supposed to exit my 4hp, only just purchased this as spare engine, when seller demonstrated it he showed it running in tub and engine coolant was coming out of exhaust at rear, however it was suggested by someone that there is another outlet under rear of powerhead and both should be showing coolant? I have examined engine at length and can find no other coolant outlet on powerhead?can anyone confirm please? thank you, J.B.D.

Re: Evinrude 4hp 1990 BE4BRHLESR cooling water.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, Thanksgiving week is the last week of deer hunting season in Maine and I spend it in a camp in the woods w/o Internet access.

The OEM 2.3-8HP service manual has a water flow diagram for a 4HP Deluxe that does in fact show that cooling water bleeds off and is discharged backwards at an angle, at the top of the exhaust housing assembly.

One other pretty definitive measure: a normal 4HP Johnson/Evinrude will weigh approx 35 lbs, a 4 HP Deluxe will weigh between about 50-55 lbs depending on the specific model.

Thanks Ratracer, I hope you enjoyed yourself in woods, great place to be away from everybody, next best to boating! I wonder if the diagram is for both 4hp, deluxe and mine which is standard? As I said when seller run this engine there was plenty of water coming out exhaust!I have examined the engine several times, one day I spent a good 30 minutes with a hand lamp and various lengths of welding wire at lower rear of powerhead, there is two different openings on the casting there, one the smaller of two is where a holding down screw for the fitting on the powerhead comes out, and there is no water hole? the other odd shaped opening on the casting (bigger one)is just the top casting bolted flat onto the powerhead with this shape in the casting, again with engine upside down and every which way and by proding with wire there is no water exit? I don't know how to put a picture on site here to show you powerehead but maybe you could tell me where I may find such info on cooling exits as I have tried everywhere I know without success? If you email me direct I'll send you some pics of engine, my email is jamesd030@aol.com thanks again J.B.D.

The return cooling water will exit the engine with the exhaust. When in the water, you will probably see some misting through the relief port. I don't know of a tell tale on this engine....least the parts book don't show any.

The return water goes out with the exhaust to keep the exhaust tube cool.

Re: Evinrude 4hp 1990 BE4BRHLESR cooling water.

Many thanks OBJ for input, it has been mentioned that this engine should show cooling water at 2 places, first one being the exhaust, and second one at lower rear of powerhead,I can find nothing or any signs of water marks, all screws in and around this area are still in original Evinrude colour and have never been disturbed,so I was begining to wonder if it had maybe been rebuilt wrongly a gasket bloking waterway?or maybe some 4hp ones did have 2 cooling outlets? I have the Clymer manual which does not show this kind of detail, is it possible for me to look up parts list anywhere? thank you, JBD

The flow diagrams for the 3/4HP and 4HP Deluxe are different. Also, as OBJ states, the standard 4HP model does not have a peehole.

Here's a recent eBay auction that has a couple of pix of a 4HP Deluxe:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Evin...11122QQitemZ4592767755QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V

A normal 4HP outboard of that approximate vintage will look like:

http://img.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/pics/F54691.jpg

As I had alluded to in a previous post, the OEM service manual for that year covers both the standard 4HP and 4HP Deluxe models, and I strongly recommend you get one instead of relying on the Clymer manual.

Edited to note: I just caught your comment in your other 4HP thread that you only have F+N, which means that you have the standard model, NOT a Deluxe!
