Evinrude 4hp earth?

Hi guys just after a quick answer on my evinrude 2hp ive got a earth wire going from the mag plate onto the powerhead and my evinrude 4hp doesnt have one, could this stop it starting? Does it need it?

You dont tell us the model number or even the year to check this out
BUT if the parts diagram shows an earth wire it should have one, if it doesn't then I'd assume it does not need one.

I think some have a separate earth wire some do not depending upon model and year.

Do you have 2 good sparks ?

The two hp does have a "ground" wire. ("Earth" to you). It needs it because the magneto armature plate is isolated from the crankcase by a plastic bushing. The spark from the coil goes to the spark plug, to ground, and back to the armature plate to complete the circuit. If the armature plate is isolated, the circuit is broken, thus the ground wire.

Most motors do not have a plastic bushing on the armature plate, thus no need for a ground wire. (Sorry, "Earth" wire.)
