Hello all,
I picked up a 1963 evinrude 5.5 hp Completley rebuilt, starts on 1st pull for $200. Good price? I also have a couple questions. I believe the max rpms are between like 3500-4600. I have the motor on a 15' fiberglass mutineer sailboat, I'm not using it for sailing all sailing material is obsalete. I'm just wondering if it's okay to be running WOT for long periods of time, the motor sits pretty low in the water, is it okay for the part that the water spits out of to be in the water and what is that called? I would also like to get more speed out of it I dont want a bigger engine because it sits so low in the water with the 5.5, is there anything I can do to the 5.5? I'm a serious person not some young kid trying to go out and get myself or anyone else hurt. Just maybe some tips. Also wondering if I should go with a different prop, It has the dual blade tiny prop on now. Thank you all very much

Re: Evinrude 5.5 hp

Welcome to iboats.

$200 for a rebuilt 5.5 is a good price. I have a 1961 that I rebuilt and it purrs.

The exhaust outlet (mixed with water) should not be under water as it will affect the back pressure and hence the timing of the engine. And because so much of the lower unit is under water it creates more drag and thus a slower performance.

The standard prop was the 2 blader.

Go to this site. It has great info for the 5.5 -> outboard-boat-motor-repair.com/

WOT is 4,000 and the plugs are J6J Champion. And the mixture is 24:1 with tcw3 oil.

Good luck!

reproping it so that it runs at 4800, is utmost for the life of the engine. the speed is another matter. for life of the engine. it needs to run around 4800 wot, no matter how fast the boat goes. less you are lugging the motor, motor you are over revving the motor. both cause excessive wear.

Where did anybody get 4800? I said 4600, which is what it says on the engine cover. Thanks for everybodys help. Since the exhaust sits under water it will ruin the engine? It sits up as high as possible so I dont know what to do.

Can you not build some kind of transom extension to get the motor a little higher?
