evinrude 50 gear engagement issue

I have a 1997 evinrude 50 horse that doesn't go into forward gear correctly anymore. When I push the control forward from neutral to engage forward sometimes it doesn't go into gear and it makes a clicking sound. If I barely move the throttle forward a little more it goes into gear and works perfect. I'm assuming it's a cable adjustment issue but I don't know what to adjust. Can someone point me in the right direction to fix this myself?
