evinrude 50 hp,,starter issues

1984 50hp evinrude,,,,issue i have is i have a fully charged battery,,,,when you turn the key the motor turns over like the battery is low,,,,very very slow,,,,,then fast ,,,and back to slow,,sometimes just clicks,,,,then sometimes it will spin like it should,,,,also it gets really hot,,,,,seen a spark and smoke on the negative battery post on the battery

Start by taking the battery cables off (both ends) and scrubbing the connectors shiny. Then reconnect.

If that doesn't fix it go to the Top Secret File and do the starter circuit troubleshooting in "Outboard won't start".

i had the same,ended up being a break/rotten main power wire,just use multimeter and test volts at end of power cable,through solenoid and at the starter,should be able to work out pretty quick where the breakdown is.

if none of the above doesnt fix your problem, i wouldnt be too scared to open up the starter. mine is a bit older but probably about the same. i took it apart, lubed and new bushing and brushes and it is so smooth now.

You either have a high resistance in your battery connections or your cables for anything to get hot.
