Evinrude 50 -not going into gear.

Please can anyone advise me with regard to an Evinrude
50 ? I think this is around 1982 model.

The engine runs fine, and the manual selector appears to work but there is no drive at the prop;

Back on dry land, with the motor in the tilted position, the motor is in gear. Turn the prop and the flywheel turns.

Drop the motor down into the running position, and the prop just spins free.

Does this sound like a gearbox problem, or have I activited some sort of lock-out device that I dont know about ?.

I would be grateful for any help.

could be many things, bad lower unit, shift linkage disconnected. spun prop. only way to find out is drop the lower unit.
