just replaced water pump and thermostat in my 87 evinrude 50 vro...still getting the overheat alarm....starts as a beep every other second (i've been told this is the low oil alarm for the vro)...i have the brown wire from the vro disconnected and im running on premix, but for some reason this is still going off....the beep every other seconds becomes afer idling for a few minutes a continuous tone...the blcok is hot...burns after a few seconds (i'm not sure if this is too hot or not)....motor starts and idles well otherwise is there something that i'm missing here?

one other quick thing to add....there is a purple wire that comes out from where the plug (the end from the control box) that wasn't hooked up to anything and i cant find anything it might connect to....i'm guessing that this is is probably for an accessory like a tach but figured i'd mention it in case its not...

When you run the premix, you first disconnect the single wire that runs to the harness from the oil tank, then the multi-wired amphenol connector that runs from the VRO pump. That will silence all alarms that are fuel and oil related.

When both of those are disconnected, the only wire that will still sound the horn is the overheat temperature switch at the cylinder head which should still be connected by a tan wire.

If the purple wire is running out of the control from a plug located below the ignition switch, it is a 12 volt positive accessory lead, which could supply voltage for gauges. There should be places for two other wires in the plug. Don't use the wire for anything that requires much power (more than a few amps) or you will overload it.

go to a marine shop and get a temperature crayon. they come in different temps. you put a piece on the block and if it is running hot, it will melt.

Just for something to try, route the rubber over-board indicator hose over the top of the block, or I probably should say over the top of the cylinder head, then down, and out the nipple in the lower pan.

RJ...if the indicator hose your talking about is routed to the nipple outlet for the telltale that is how it was routed when i got the motor....it runs over the head down and out on the right hand side....just out of curiousity....how might this have been done otherwise?

p.s. thanks for the input so far guys

Re: evinrude 50 still overheating?

another question i forgot to mention before....its only a couple (2-3) minutes at idle before the overheat alarm begins to go off.....is this even enough time for the motor to actually overheat?

Routeing the hose over the top of the power head will break up any steam, or dead air pockets that may form in the cooling passages. You don't want to route it straight across the back of the block. When you replaced the pump, did you replace the entire assembly? Is the thermostat in correctly? Just for a test, run it without the thermostat.

Re: evinrude 50 still overheating?

i did replace the entire water pump....just got through running the motor with the muffs on again....disconnected the harness from the vro and then disconnected/grounded out the wire from the temp sensor on the block with the key on....horn sounded so that should be good...started the motor up and ran it for a while...good pee stream...no horns at all....ran great and stayed cool....while before it was feeling much warmer after just a couple minutes...everything seems to be ok now...im guessing that the horn had something to do with the vro alarm right?
thans again for the help guys....if all goes well i'm going to take her out for a quick ride this afternoon in the river
