Evinrude 50173S Throttle...

I am not very mechanical but have a friend who works on a 'new' outboard I just got. It's a 50173S (came with an old ebbtide bassmaster). I've had him rebuild carbs, put in a new waterpump, spark plugs, starter and generally tune it up.

Good news is... it runs great and has plenty of power!

I have one remaining problem that is probably simple for you guys... the throttle control is VERY hard to move. When I move it all the way forward, most of the time it doesn't have the engine throttled all the way up and I have to bang the control pretty good to get it to throttle the rest of the way up. My friend tried using some WD40 type stuff to loosen it up first, but no luck.

Any ideas? Could it be the throttle cable instead of the control piece?

Are you talking about when you have it in gear or in neutral?

Edit: If its in neutral it isn't supposed to throttle all the way up. There is a stop that won't let it.

While in gear it won't. It throttles up better in neutral actually, but I've never tried to throttle it all the way up, just reved it a bit. Either way though, the control stick is a serious pain to move.

First disonnect the cables from the engine and see if it the throttle moves freely, if it does then check the linkage on the engine. If it is still hard to move then disconnect the cable from the throttle and gear selector (if applicable) and see if it moves freely, if it does it is the cables.

It usually is the cable.

on my 71 50hp(same model as yours), my controls have a friction knob in front of the throttle lever. but if you allready know about that i am sorry to insult your intelligence. just trying the easy stuff first
