I HAVE WHAT i AM TOLD IS A 1969 EVINRUDE 55

model # 55973A

ser# J09949

THERE ARE TWO BLACK WIRES COMING FROM UNDER THE FLYWHEEL( ATTACHED TO MAGNETO OR POINTS I AM ASSUMING) AND THEY ARE IN EXTREMELY POOR CONDITION WITH BREAKAGE AND FRAYING. ONE GOES TO BLOCK GROUND AND THE OTHER GOES TO A CONNECTOR. tHE TWO CLACK WIRES START TOGETHER IN THE SAME CASING FROM UNDER THE FLYWHEEL BUT THEN SEPARATE ABOUT INCHES DOWN THE LINE. MOTOR TURNS OVER BUT NO SPARK, ARE THESE WIRES POINTS RELATED?

THANKS FOR ANY HELP IN ADVANCE, CAPTAIN KIRK

Sounds like the grounding/shorting wiring for stopping the engine. Look for a disconnection on the longer of the two wires and disconnect it. If you get fire or the engine starts, you will need to replace the "shorting lead assembly". You will also have to stop the motor, if it starts, by choking or running it out of gas.

Not. Actually one of them is black and the other one is black with a white stripe. The black one grounds the breaker plate. The black with white stripe goes to the breaker points and connects them to the amplifier. The points tell the amplifier when to discharge through the coil to fire the cylinder.

Re: Evinrude 55 Black Wires?

Hello Ezeke and thank you,

Right now we are only looking to achieve spark, The wires are in really bad shape (the two black ones) most everything else in in good condition.

do you know if it will have spark if the trans in engaged in forward?

It is an old electronic shift and we can't seem to get it into neutral.

Thanks again, Mark J. fishead54
