I have a 1979 Evinrude 55 hp model # 55902. After an unsuccessful try at geting it to run, my fishing partner noticed a nipple near the lower edge of the intake manifold. It looks like there should be a hose on it and the nipple had fuel dripping from it. He also noticed another nipple near it on the air silencer. It looks like a hose should fit between these two nipples. I have a shop manual for this engine, but the carb. diagram only shows the hose coming off the intake manifold. It does not show where the other end goes. Would I be correct in assuming that it goes on the nipple on the air silencer? Also, what is the purpose of this hose? Is it a return line for unused fuel? If this hose is missing, will it keep the engine from firing?

That is a block drain. You are correct, there should be a hose between the two.

The hoses get lost when people remove the silencer. It really should not effect the running of the engine. It's there to keep all that oily mess from dripping into the lower cowl pan.

I understand the "drain" part, put does it only drain fuel when the engine is cranked and doesn't fire?
Doesn't that create a potntial fire hazard on a hot engine?

The silencer drain is fed to the crankcase on the engine. Whenever the engine cranked -- running or not, any fuel in that line is pulled into the crankcase, passed into the ports, and burned when the engine starts. It only poses a fire hazard if its not hooked up and fuel runs into the lower cowling and lays in there.
