Evinrude 5518 5.5Hp

[Urban Legend]

I have a 1959 Evinrude model 5518. Motor turns over and runs for about 17-20 sec and dies. What seems to be the problem just put in new plugs. Any suggestions? This does run on a pressurized tank 2liner. Thanks Bob

Is the pressure tank holding pressure? Is the cap tight?

Try spraying a fuel premix in the carb before it dies... Or pumping the button on the tank... Does it keep running? If yes, then it's a fuel supply problem.

Does it start right up again after it stalls out?

It starts up after 2-3 pulls and runs for the same time I don't believe the tank is leaking the cap is tight loosing the cap after and their is pressure and pushing the button while it's dieing does not help. Will try the fuel mix in the carb and report. thanks

You might try taking out the fuel filter also. It may be nearly clogged, and causing the carb to run out of fuel in the bowl. If you haven't checked your coils for cracking and such, you're in for a hard time diagnosing that motor. Bad coils will make it do all sorts of strange things--none of them good. Steve and I are so accustomed to checking those first, that we assume everyone else does too.

yea jbjennings is the man on these old motors.. Helped me get my 63 evinrude 5.5 running this week, but yea.. I had everything spark compression air.. and my fuel filter was blocking..bypassed it.. crunk instantly and runs strong now.. lil carb adjustment and its in it to win it

Ok Tried the premix fuel and it does stay running. What do I do know? thanks Bob

Thanks for all the help. It's running great now. When I replaced the fuel lines the air line was bent and restricting air at the connecter not quiet enough room from the inside. Thanks again for the help.
