evinrude 5524, 5.5 hp driveshaft reassembly

im new to the boards, and i have replaced the impeller and water pump, but now....
hope you can help me. i have taken apart a evinrude 5524, vintage 1962 5.5hp. the problem is that when i took the power head off the housing, the spring went south, and now i dont seem to know the correct sequence for reassmbly. can anyone help??

I think this is the same for all the 5.5's.

I think this is the same for all the 5.5's.

Agreed. Make sure the carbon seal is right side up too. The spring goes in the large recess and the o-ring is a snug fit in the small side.

I always suggest using a new 303355 gasket and 303347 oring. If that assembly leaks, water gets in the crankcase and destroys the bearings over time. Then somebody always blames it on lack of oil.

many thanks to all!!!! that is a what i was missing! i was close on the reassembly. now all i have to do is track down the new seal and o ring.
