this motor is in awsome shape. runs awsome. i had it out on the lake ran great used it for 2 hours that day. 2 days later i put it in a barrel of water to run for a guy that was interested in buying it. never pumped water? it cooled just fine out on the lake. Why would it not work as soon as i start it in a barrel. and if it is the impeller how do you replace it and how much will that cost? thanks

It may have something to do with being in a barrel. How deep did you have it? The pump needs to be submerged.

On the other hand, the impeller may have chosen that moment to disintegrate. Consider yourself luck you weren't out on the lake.

1. Remove the spark plugs
2. Put motor in forward gear
3. Remove the four bolts holding the lower unit on
4. While putting downward pressure on the lower unit, slowly rotate the flywheel. There is a pin that must align with a slot. When it aligns, the lower unit will come down a bit more. STOP turning the flywheel and don't turn it again till it is back together.
5. Now look in the gap and you will see the brass shift rod connector. Remove the accessable screw.
6. Now the lower unit will come down and away. Note the position of that pin for reassembly. The pump will be right in front of you. It is NOT necessary to remove the pin. Unbolt the pump housing and pull the shaft out of the unit.

7. For reassembly, put the shaft/pin in the same position. When reinstalling the shift rod screw, use a flashlight and make sure the notch is precisely aligned with the screw hole before installing the screw. Failure to do this will cause the screw to drag on the edge of the notch and it will wipe the threads off the screw every time. Then it will fall out five miles from shore. Never at dockside.

Impellers are available right here at iboats. Look it up for the price.

Would this be the same way that you would change the impeller on a 1976 6Hp model #6604A? I just got it yesterday And want to change it out before I take it out. I was told it would be a good idea to do this because it is probably the original one.

I am in a similar situation. I just "inherited" an Evinrude 6HP model E6RCUD and want to replace the water pump and impeller but don't have a manual. Will the same steps work?

No obvious differences between the 76 and 71 models as far as changing the pump impeller goes.

the '87 model is rather different.

Held on by one bolt from above at the front and two from underneath further back

No fiddling about lining up a pin with a slot. The drive shaft pulls straight out of the crankshaft .... with luck !

No join in the shift rod. It pulls out from the shifter mechanism at the top.

Unbolt the water pump and slide it up the shaft ( You can leave the shaft in position... in fact best to or you might damage the seals) Look out for the impeller drive pin as you slide the impeller off too.

Make sure the O ring is in position below the splines at the top of the drive shaft.
Turn the flywheel to aid relocating the shaft splines in the crankshaft.

Lightly grease the splines before reassembly.

In all cases while the gearcase is off is the time to consider if driveshaft seal renewal might be sensible.
