I just bought a 1974 6 hp Evinrude. A few questions-
1) It runs nicely, but on low speed, it runs best with the low idle jet closed entirely. The garage sale guy I bought it from said that the low speed idle needle valve and seat were replaced after someone had tightened it down and stripped it. 2) Also, having run older 5 hp Johnsons ('51 & '56) a great deal, when the Ev. 6 is wide open, it seems like its rpm is not quite as high as it should be. The motor runs nicely at all speeds. What would cause that?
3) When newly re-started after sitting a few minutes, the engine starts, then stalls. The gas tank and line are new. When I pump the gas bulb, then the engine starts and continues running. What would that mean?
4) Regarding the background of this motor- is this the "same" as other Evinrudes- like the 9.9 and 15 being the same, but with diffent carbs?
5) Anybody have any comments as to the quality of these "fisherman" models (c.1974), their quirks, flaws, strengths, etc.?

Thanks!

That's a fine engine, rjw.

Sounds like your carb needs an overhaul and resetting the float level.

Good luck. Moving to the Evinrude troubles Forum :)
