I'm working on a 6hp evinrude that I believe is a 1987 model. It has a "primer or squirter" in place of a regular choke action as near as I can tell. This pull knob is external. A couple of questions: What's the significance of the markings that are on the cover related to this "primer'? It seems to run better with the knob fully pulled out. Doesn't seem to me that should be right. Also: On the tiller handle is a kill button. Right behind that you can turn a knob. Is this adjusting anything? Also do you need to remove the starter coil to remove the carberator? I haven't picked up a owners of service manual yet so any help will be appreciated and thanks in advance.

Re: Evinrude 6 hp motor questions

The knob right behind the kill button is an adjustment to mechanically set the idle up or down.

Running the engine (better) with the primer out indicates that you are bypassing the carburetor....... meaning that the carburetor is fouled. Remove, clean and rebuild the carburetor, using as complete kit. Kits available on this site, your dealership, NAPA, Sierra, other marine stores, etc.

Normally you need to remove the starter to obtain access to that port carburetor retaining nut, however, (sometimes) with a proper size screwdriver, patience, a ice pick or scribe with a hook tip, and gentle tapping of a hammer, you'll be able to loosen that nut and spin it off.
