I recently bought a boat with a 1972 Evinrude 65hp 3-cylinder. Aftter kitting the carbs I put muffs on and started it up. I checked to see that there was adequate water and found water squirting out of the lower unit in several different directions from small holes (not the flush hole) all about 1/8" diameter. The water was not from any gasket area or mating surface. Is this normal for this engine?<br />Larry

Water is better then oil! I just picked up a 1970 Rude 60 HP and oil comes out of those little holes you are talking about on mine.... UG!

Re: Evinrude 65hp water leaks

Thanks. I'm more familiar with Mercury than Evinrude. I did some searching through the archives and it appears that those holes are supposed to be there, right? I'll go ahead and run the engine a bit and see if it gets hot. Would it be smart for me to go ahead and replace the water pump impeller just to be sure all is well?

it would be smart if you don't know when it was replaced

I have the same engine. Those holes are supposed to be there. On muffs water will come out of these holes. If the impeller condition is unknown, then replace. It is worth the "peace of mind".
