Hi, I have 1969 6hp Evinrude. It starts and runs (however very poorly - spitters and chokes) when I put the selector on handle in the "Start" position, but if I move the sevector even 1/8 of an inch further (increase) it dies right away. If I decrease, it also dies. Here is what I have checked:
1) Compression is 100/100
2) Fuel pump seems to be fine- even tried with constant pumping with priming bulb.
3) Cleaned spark plugs (new last year, not even 20 hours on them)
4) Tried to synchronize the linkage as per manual - adjust the notch on carb follower with little arm on carburator - did not seem to make any difference.
5) As per manual this motor does not require setting of ignition timing, so not sure.
6) Carburator was rebuild last year - all new seals and gaskets

Gas is fresh with 25:1 mixture.

I am not even sure what to touch next.
Please help, any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks again!

Check to see if it is firing on both cylinders. You could have a bad electrical connection at the spark plug boot, or oxidation on the points.

I agree. Sounds like a fuel delivery issue right now. Some clean fresh fuel mix and maybe a carb cleaning would be a good idea. May as well take a peek at the ignition while you're at it. It's quick and easy and will give you lots of info. Clean and set points to .020" and make sure the s'plug wires are in good shape. You can snip off about an inch on one end to check. If they're green/corroded, you need new ones. I just changed mine in my 10hp and WOW what a difference. I had new plugs and points but the old/original wires. I put some fresh 7mm copper wires and boots on and BINGO! It was like a new motor. I think it cost $15 at the most from NAPA. Here's a link on how to set your carb, that may help some too. Keep us posted.
