For a 1990 Evinrude 70hp E70TLES, what is the order of installation of the thermostat Cup 330273 and the (rubber doughnut looking) Valve Seat 320880? The diagram in the parts list is not very clear and the manual says nothing. It looks to me like the cup goes in first with the open side out and the rubber valve seat goes inside the cup and then the cup is pushed into the cylinder head cavity with a block of wood. I ordered the parts but I don't have them yet. The parts that were there before were different, looked like an adaption by a mechanic.

Pushed in with a press? How is it done? Can you please explain the order and direction they go. The one I took off the engine had the cup cap facing toward the thermostat and the rubber valve seat behind it. The opposite of what I surmised above. Can you provide a a link that explains it in more detail?

This is correct.....and the head is put in a press and a socket is turned over and used as a arbor to press in place.

I did not remove the cylinder head to do the job. I just did it a few minutes ago with a hammer ( I should've used a heavier hammer) and a 6" long piece of round ash from a shovel handle. It went in lopsided, flush on one 1/2, not on the other. I kept at it till it was even, not neatest job, but it'll seal. Next time I won't remove the darn thing unless I am going to be removing the cylinder head for cleaning or something.

Thanks Faztbullet and Boobie.

END!
