Greetings, I just purchased a 73' Bass Charger with a 73' Dilly Trailer. The motor that is on the boat is a 70hp Evinrude Triumph. Does anyone know what year this engine is? The serial number I believe is 10012178. Any help would be appreciated. In addition, I am told that this engine hasnt been run for about 4 years. It appears to be in decent shape. What key components should I look at first prior to even thinking about starting this up?

Look on the transom bracket for numbers on a plate. Something like 70442

Probably a 74' Model

Look for decent compression(Even on all Cylinders)
Check lower unit fluid for water intrusion(Milky Looking) Black is OK.
Replace the water pump
Put some TCW-3 oil in the cylinders, before you try to start it(Couple Tablespoons and turn it over by hand with the flywheel)
Check for spark
New spark plugs(Probably QL77JC4) gapped at .030
Mix clean fuel and oil in a clean fuel tank at a 50:1 ratio(2.65 ounces per Gal. of gas) or 1 pint TCW-3 oil to 6 gallons of gas.
Get a Manual ASAP(Bottom of page). I would get the Seloc if you are just starting out with outboards. Just a few things to consider.

Re: Evinrude 70hp...year?

Thanks guys for such a fast response. The Model # is 70473 M. The serial number is actually J0012178. Any help explaining to me what the numbers/letters mean would be great. This boat and trailer does require a bit of elbow grease to get it looking really good. I paid 500 for the boat, trailer and motor. Do you think this was a good price? As stated previously, the motor does look in good shape (appearance wise). Thanks...

Re: Evinrude 70hp...year?

I can tell you it is indeed a 1974 Model, but the numbers are a mystery, other than to tell the model year. The "70" is the HP for sure and usually the "73" is the model year, but not in this case. If the motor appears to be in good shape, do as suggested above, starting with the compression test. Put some oil in the cylinders as I said to lube then up before you turn it over. Compression should be at least 90 PSI and all cylinders within 10-15% of each others readings. Compression gauge can be had at almost any auto parts store for under $30.00. This will tell you if you should proceed with the other tasks or weather it's going to get more involved. Let us know what you find out...

EDIT: And Yes, I think $500.00 is a good deal...
