Does anyone have a source or recommendations for a tach that will work on a 1963 Evinrude Speedifour V-4 with magneto ignition? I've seen the Tinytach; but I'm looking for an analog gauge; preferably something that won't look too out-of-date on a late '60's runabout, and even better if I can find a speedo that would go with it. Too much to hope that I can find an old Airguide chrome bezel set, but I'm still looking . . .

Thanks.

try e-bay for older parts... I dont know what will work with you motor but they have a mass of vintage stuff so you may get a speedo that will look good.. Dave

The Teleflex heavy duty series might not look too bad. You would have to check with them to see if it works with your application.

Gauge

Re: evinrude 75 hp magneto tachometer

Tachs these days seem to always run off one lead off of the stator to ground. Try one of the AC ususally (two)yellow leads comming to the rectifier for one connection and provide a ground to the block for the other. Of course the tach will require ground and 12+ and perhaps a light, go ahead try it first with temporary wire but this should work great. I assume your motor has a rectifier to charge the battery and if so you are in great shape to use any of the modern tachs. You will have to set the cyl swith correctly on some tach. If as I suspect my assumption is wrong and you don't have a stator. An Automobile tach set on 8cyl would work bu using a sense lead derived from the coil side of the points and a ground connection to that tach. Points in a 4 cycle engine 8(cyl) should produce the same pulse pattern as a 2cycl 4 cylinder.

Re: evinrude 75 hp magneto tachometer

Thanks for all the help. I've been following eBay, and am still optimistic. This motor has no charging system at all (a generator - not alternator (stator) was optional but is not fitted to the motor), so I'm looking for something that will connect to a magneto ignition.

I've been meaning to try an automotive test meter on the boat, but I know that the only lead from the points goes to the kill switch: ground the lead and the motor dies (magneto works the opposite of a coil-and-battery system - turning the "off" position on the igniton switch actually completes the circuit, grounding the mag; the "run" position opens the circuit).

Thanks for all the help.

Mark.

Yeah, just try a portable auto tach set on 8 cycl. Sounds like you found the right lead.
