I'm a novice with my first ouboard to play with, although I have done car engines. My new boat has an evinrude 75, which is 3 cyl, 3 carbs and 3 shiny black units on the side from which the HT leads lead (what are these units pls?)

On 1st use after 5 mins the power just dies and I barely managed to get up to plane. Came back to shore, set off again 15 mins later managed 1 run before power went again. Leaving it then made no difference - power remained gone when I tried it half hour later. Overall I think engine runs lumpily with a tendency to stall on engaging drive, but I am not sure whether 3 cyl should be lumpy.

Plug gaps look huge (what should they be - 1.8 mill?) filters clear, fuel getting through and I see on a previous post that the coils can lose their resistance. Fuel was new, and vents open and not blocked. Telltale was flowing cleanly.

Any tips on where to start?

rx,

Those components you describe are the coils.

When your engine acts up, do you have spark on all three?

Re: evinrude 75 power loss after 5 mins

Hi Djohns - sorry for slow response. Firstly, have discovered is a 70 hp evinrude from 1983.

Can't be sure about the sparking when acting up as am restricted to running in a dustbin until I can next get to a lake.

However, got it up to temp with the ears on, and there was a spark on all three. Saying that, it wouldn't idle so I think it was still playing up. I took a compression test and got 140, 138 and 132 psi, which I think is OK (?).

My thoughts are that it is probably an HT lead (I got a shock when touching one of the leads), a coil or a fuel pump. Mind you I've read about a 'stator' although I haven't got a clue what it does or is for.

Any suggestions?
