I am new to boating and I recently purchased a boat with an engine I can?t identify. It has no decals or anything that can help me find out the engine size and year, with the exception of a small plate with this numbers: 140TL77S and J4805402. This will be an Evinrude 140 hp, 1977 right?
The problem is that the engine is a V6 and someone told me that for an Evinrude 140 hp from 1977 to match the existing engine, it should be a V4. Is this true?

Re: Evinrude 77, 140 hp?

Correct. In 1977 the V4's were 85, 115, and 140 hp motors. I believe the V6's were 150hp and up.

One thing to consider, however, is that many parts were interchangeable between the v6's and v4's. It is possible that somebody put a v6 powerhead on a '77 140hp. It could also be possible that somebody used the mounting plate from a v4 on your v6. Hard to say.

subigbuck,

Yes, I think they replace the transom from a V4.

tashasdaddy,

The numbers I found in the plug on the block are:
200649S and J0002081

Thanks to both of you for all your help you can provide me.

Thats a 1976 200 Evinrude. The 140 numbers are from a 1977 140 Johnson.

Yes, the previous owner said he was told it was a 200 hp, but he did not know the year. At first, I thought the owner was wrong because of the plate on the transom, but I trust the numbers on the block more than the ones in the plate.
The engine was painted and the plug was cover with it. I used a knife to uncover the numbers.

Once again thank you so much to both of you!!!
I really appreciate your help.
