Evinrude 8 won't plane boat *UPDATE*

Well, I took the Evinrude 8 hp to the dealership today. He checked for spark, took apart and rebuilt the fuel pump/filter, replaced a few parts from my carb. rebuild job. He made several adjustments as well. No matter what he did, a master tech with 30+ years of experience, he could not get the motor to run any better than I did. He had no idea what was wrong with it. So, he graciously offered me my $800 back. I took the offer.<br /><br />When looking for this motor, I found an 8 hp Honda at my local marina. I should've bought this motor to begin with because it is close by and they service Hondas, but I went the cheap route (and it ended up costing me more, as usual).<br /><br />So...that's the end of that story. I took the Honda for an hour long test run tonight and everything's fine. Thank goodness!<br /><br />Thank you for all of the help trying to correct the 8 hp Evinrude!

Hey, SW.<br /><br />Did the wrench check that you have the correct size jets in the carb?<br /><br />Just occurred to me. There are myths out there that going to larger jets makes small outboards more powerful. Maybe the previous owner believed that and put in oversize jets.

I believe he did check that, JB...this dealer had done all of the service on the motor from when it was new, so I doubt there was anything on the motor that he didn't know about.<br /><br />Besides, when I had the carb apart, I noted the jets were not removable (fixed in throttle body).
