Bought a powerhead 115hp for my 85hp. Did a teardown to check over and did a quick hone/ re-ring. Found pistons were 0.020" over so she has had some previous enjoyment on her.
My policy is to always, always, always confirm rod #'s because some times you wind up getting 2 rods with the same number and then you can't confirm what is what. Anyhow, I have 2 rods with the wrist pin oil hole pointing up (which FSM says is correct) and 2 pointing down. Assuming this is to oil the wrist pin and gravity takes care of the lower bearings did the previous user install 2 rods upside down for a reason? Maybe they put them all together the same way and then turned the piston over LH vs RH and din't notice what they did??? Does it matter?

The oil holes must absolutely point "up".

Having them point down will result in "blue" w/pins and bearings!

It's the top and bottom piston. Thinking about just turning them over and swapping holes. It's been honed. Any thoughts?

Top & bottom piston? Same bank, both banks, what. I't better to state exactly what number cylinder they came out of. Cylinders are numbered when standing in back of the engine, facing the spark plugs, as follows:

2......1
4......3

Whatever bank those two were in, they were obviously in the opposite bank where they would require being turned over.... BUT there's already pistons in those cylinders.

Those pistons have floating wrist pins... frankly, I'd dismantle them and do it right.

1&4 rotating on an x pattern would resolve. Marine is not my forte, but I just don't see any reason to dismantle. I do agree that is the right way though. The rings are new and the rods were upside down so to say keeping everything in the same position will still not occur. I'll keep you posted if it goes bang!
