Having start and idle issues with an older (1980) evinrude v4. I checked compression which seems a bit low, Around 90 psi across all 4 cylinders. Is that compression too low for the fuel pump to work properly? this motor just will not start unless I squirt some gas directly into the cylinders. Then it fires right up. It will not idle properly. When I try to move the lever back to idle so I can put it in gear it stalls. Carbs re clean. Filters are clean too. I did notice that fuel is barely trickling into the filter.

If it runs, the compression is enough to operate the fuel pump. Assuming the piston is not blown out of that cylinder. But you say it has 80 psi, so that is not the case.

Sounds like the primer isn't working, or your starting procedure needs review. Hold the key in while cranking to start. Bump it if the motor wants to stall during warm up.

Thanks for the input. This motor does not have a primer. It has flaps on the front of the carbs with an electric choke assy'. It also has a manual choke that can be used to hold the flaps closed. I should say that sometimes it starts right up with no prime after it has been started with a prime and ran for a few minutes. But then again sometimes it doesn't.
