so i just got a free 16.5 ft bayliner on a trailer with an 85hp evinrude. no idea on the year of the boat or motor. and let me state that this is my first boat, and im an auto mechanic (and race motocross) but never worked on an outboard before. anyway, after 3 - 55gal drum fulls of pine needles, mud, leaves and sticks, and a thorough shop-vac session...power washer and all kinds of chemicals, the boat is in MINT condition. Then engine however, not.
took the heads off because the starter kicked up and would not crank. after vacuuming out the rats nests, the cylinders are covered in rust. rings are seized to the walls. so i stripped the entire motor of its electronics and stator, clutch etc. took off what looks to be the reeds and now i can see down into the crank shaft area as well as the sides of 3/4 pistons. pulled the carbs and those are in great shape (thanks to the reeds the rats couldnt make nests in there. to make a long story short, i took off everything off the block itself and soaked the block in mystery oil for a few days now...each day spraying more and more on it from a spray bottle. the lower 1/2 (below the rings) of the pistons look good...and everything inside the crank looks good and rust free....but it still wont even budge.
my question is...how do you take the actual block off the outboard itself? ive removed the covers and revealed what seems to be 10 bolts going through and into the block...but it still wont budge. i understand theres a shaft that runs down to the prop...how do you get that out? i just want to remove the block (or is it powerhead?) and soak it in a drum of old engine oil and see if i can get it to spin. then ill go ahead and disassemble the block and hone out the cyl and new rings on the pistons to give it life again. carb clean with a sync and should be good to go.
i assume the engine sat for about 3-4 years (along with the boat) under a big ol pine tree....i found it with no tarp or engine cover on...prop is missing so the rats climbed up the exhaust and made nests that way in the 2 lower cylinders in front of the pistons. the engine itself doesnt look to have seized due to overheating or failure...just from rust and not being used...
any help is SO GREATLY appreciated!
THANKS!
EDIT
Thanks again!
