I'm looking at a very clean engine for sale that's supposedly converted to a much higher HP. They said it's been modified by Zeke himself before he passed away. Zeke was a well known local Evinrude guy who had a dealership in Jupiter, FL. They're telling me the engine was 88HP, and with the conversions it's well over 120 HP now. They estimate it to be closer to 130. It's very clean, and well kept.

I didn't know if this conversion was possible and if it's common.

Thanks!

JOE

The 88 HP is prop shaft rated.----The same basic block was also used on 140 HP models , rated at the powerhead.-----But the 88 model has smaller intake ports than a 140 hp model.----Powerhead would have to be taken apart for machining and modifications to boost the power.

It's certainly possible to get this kind of hp out of a V4 crossflow. As racerone mentioned sometimes the block porting has to be modified in order to make this hp. When that is done, sometimes the porting changes detract from the off-the-line holeshot. Somehow it does not sound as if you are looking for a race engine. Hopefully you are able to run this engine prior to purchase and find that it will adapt well to your application and that is offered at a price that is attractive to you. That engine was made for many, many years by OMC. They have been extremely popular over the years. Reliable. Parts are readily available.
