Hi,

Question for all mecano guy.

I have an Evinrude 8hp , 2000 , 4stroke outboard.
It ran for 3 saisons at this time, but last summer the engine start burning is oil. After around 100hours of trolling the engine burned oil...

It worked perfectly, start in one shot, same power as before, ran everytime with Evinrude 4 stroke Synthetic oil.

My question, do I have to a rebuilt on this engine, oversize etc... Many people say dont touch that Yannick, but next summer put 15w40 oil (not synthetic).

The thermostat is ok.
The impeler is ok too.
This engine is installed on an aluminium boat of 20feet. The propeller pitch is ok (I dont know the RPM at full throttle).

What do you think ?!

thanks. ;)

yannick_bouchard@hotmail.com

Even though it is a four stroke, I would do a decarb on it and see if it is just stuck rings, which I strongly beleive! You would be well off to do it two, maybe three times letting it sit overnight each time. I do not know the formulation of the evenrude synthetic, but if fore some reason the engine were running ruch all that time it dosent matter what oil you are using! Maybe you need a little hotter plug in that engine. Also make sure you are running 87 octane as the higher octain can cause carbon build up!

On another front, was the engine broken in on a regular oil before you changed it to the synthetic?

You may have received bad advice on break in that is non reversable, although the oil burning should have started earlier I would think! Breaking in an engine on synthetics can lead to cylider glazing do to improper ring seating. Do the decarb and let us know how it went!

Did the owners manual say not to use synthetic on the break in? I'm sure you would have seen oil consumption and lack of compression from the get go if glazing was the problem.

Glazing depends somewhat on the hardness of cyls and rings. My head motor guru on cyl glazing says the nikasil process is the one which really causes break in problems with synthetics.

A friend of mine used moblle syn in his chevy truck since new. It used a quart every 1k miles and finally stopped using oil at approx 60k miles! The only thing we can figure is it took that long for the parts to seat...very strange but true.
