Evinrude 8hp idle, choke, frustration

The son and I bought a used jon with a 8hp Evinrude. The number on the side of the motor is E8RCEC. We can get it started pretty easily but can't get it to idle. If we pull out on the choke knob slightly when it starts to die it picks back up. Push in the choke and repeat the process. We took the carb off and got a rebuild kit. Turns out the rebuild kit was the wrong one so we just sprayed all the pieces and parts with carb cleaner and put it back together. Runs a little better but still the same issue. From my searches it seems it must be a dirty jet or an air leak somewhere.

Any ideas?

From the scematics I found I can only find a slow speed jet on my carb.

Try squeezing the primer bulb a couple of times when the motor starts to stall out. If the motor picks back up, chances are good that the fuel pump is either bad, or, the filter screen on the fuel pump is dirty. I like to change the fuel line between the pump and the carb to a clear (light blue plastic) one. That way you can see the fuel flow and see if there any air bubbles reaching the carb which will cause the motor to stumble and stall out.

when you get the right kit, be sure to remove the welch plug at the top of the carb, and clean the low speed circuit with a small strand of wire. ( clean all passages with the wire, but be very thorough with the low speed, there are some tiny orifices in the carb)

There are a couple of things worth mentioning about this motor that you may or not be aware of. What you are calling the choke is actually a dual function choke and primer system. As you pull it out all the way it is injecting fuel into the intake, this is the primer function. if you release it from that position it should go back in most of the way by it's self with the red ring at the base of the shaft still being visible, this is the choke position. after the motor has warmed up a bit you push the knob in all the way, this is the running position. Second thing is the carb rebuild kit, there was a newer improved / countermeasured black plastic carb top that is quite a bit different than the original one, is it possible that you figured you had the wrong rebuild kit because of this difference in appearance?

Re: Evinrude 8hp idle, choke, frustration

My son took another look at the motor this afternoon. (it's at his house) He found a crack in the corner of the fuel pump block. Not sure if block it the correct term but it is what I'm using. I took apart the fuel pump. What a pain! Little springs that don't seem to have much holding them in place. I hope I got it back together correctly. Not sure if it matters though because the crack goes from the corner screw hole to the center of the pump.

Does this mean I'm now looking for a new fuel pump? I guess that would make it suck air.
