That model number is wrong. The 5 should be a S

E - Evinrude
8 - 8 hp
SR - Sail, Ropestart
L - Longshaft (20") (you say your's is xlong? someone may have changed the leg in it's past.)
CU - 1987
D - Model run

Re: evinrude 8hp WHAT YEAR?

Despite what the the model number says, a SRL ought to be a 25". It has a 10" extension peice.

Don't forget you'll need to shorten the water pump tube 10". Check the local junkyards and online ones (such as tcoutboard.com, marinepartsoutlet.com) for the parts. The driveshaft and such appear to still be available in the 15" length, but the pair will set you back over $200. Mind you you could ebay your remaining parts and offset the cost.

Indeed the extension is 10".

Does anyone know if a 1991 lower unit is compatible with the 1987? They appear very similar.
Thanks
