I have an evinrude 9522 1965 evinrude 9.5hp I removed the lower unit, and changed the water pump impeller as well as an oil change. Now trying to put it back together I can get it within 5/8 of an inch. then it will not go back together any more no matter what, I cannot see anything hanging up. But I am sure I am missing something, just don't know what and by the way I am unimpressed with the selloc repair manual.....

Sounds like either the water tube, the shift coupling or the drive shaft is not lined up. Try rotating the flywheel a little in the clockwise direction to get the drive shaft splines to locate in the crankshaft.

thanks for the quick answer that was it.......I put her in water and started her, she was stumbling and finicky at first but the low speed idle was too lean, so the minute I adjusted that she started and idled perfect, a little touch that low speed idle but boy does she run good.................

Glad to see you did not do what a friend of mine did with his 65HP Merc. He just forced everything up and bent his shift rod, made a mess of the water tube and stripped a couple of bolts out. Of course it was after the fact when he brought it around for me to "have a look"

thats funny, my buddy did the same to his 70 hp mercury, he changed out the impeller and had to force it back together, he has a bent shift rod now, everything else seems fine. This is why I asked when it wouldn't go together smoothly, live and learn.
Speaking of the mercury though, how did you fix his bent shift rod, I am needing to know since his boat is now down and I will most likely be the one to help repair it so any pointers........
