Evinrude 9.5 slips out of gear

Hi All,

Had my '67 sportwin 9.5 for 6 months now, and over the last 2 trips, I've noticed the reverse gear has started slipping back into neutral, even at idle. The forward gear seems fine. I'm not familiar with outboard engine mechanics, however am technically minded, and keen to have a go at fixing this. I've read a number of posts on similar issues, and was wondering if it is likely to be a rounded clutch dog, and whether I can reverse it, as has been suggested for other models? If it isn't this, what else could it be? Could it simply need adjustment of the shifting rods? I have both the service and parts manuals for this model, so am happy to pull things apart.

Im not sure if it's still possible to get replacement parts for this engine, but it has been running better than a lot of modern ones Ive used, and Id hate to part with it. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

If you reverse the clutch dog you take the chance that you will move the problem to the forward gear. It would be better to replace it. The part number is 377458, 393879, or 329795. That's a dealer part, but there are often some on Ebay.

You would also need a seal kit. Iboats sells them, but be sure to get the one for your model number: http://www.iboats.com/Johnson-Lower...4296561--**********.188436299--view_id.271288

Thanks very much for the info. Whether it's wise or not, I'm likely to have a go at replacing this. Are there any serious pitfalls I should watch out for, that the manuals may not mention?

Re: Evinrude 9.5 slips out of gear

Not sure if people will see this as its an old thread, however i thought it worth adding for those searching similar problems (and with as little expertise as myself).

My original problem of the reverse gear sliping back into neutral got worse; after a while I couldnt shift into reverse at all. I noticed that some posters have said it was worth checking the shift connector, as play may have developed where the bolts connect the rods together. So I did this before looking at the clutch dog (a more difficult job). All I did was unscrew both connecting bolts, readjust the sleeve over both the rod ends, and bolt it up again nice and tight. There didnt seem to be much play to begin with, but I thought it was worth doing now I had the lower unit off. It now seems to be shifting neatly into all gears, but I guess the real test will be on the water.

Hope this helps others with this kind of problem.
