Was cleaning up the tiller of my '73 9.5 (model 9322). Unscrewed the nut holding the plastic grip, promptly had the spring followed by the washer shoot out, and then the rod that runs on the gears at the base of the tiller arm dropped out onto the floor. It took me ages to get back in with the pressure of the spring and a. I haven't got it in the proper position in relation to the gearing (the bottom of the rod has gears through 180degrees) , nor b. in relation to the indicators on the shaft for start, shift etc. Can anyone advise the correct method? Also the best OMC/Evinrude manual for this motor year?

,chirombo , there is normally a cir clip that prevents the rod from falling out on most models. You should see a groove for it on the shaft. Once on, you can trial fit the handle a few times to match up the gears. nevjb
