Evinrude 9.9/15 remote cable setup

In the following thread Lion Hunter posted pictures of his 9.9 remote setup.

I have a '86 15hp with the remote kit 0398032 and an older Simplex controller that takes the Long Life cables. I'm starting to wonder if I need to buy a different controller. Can I use those cables with that same kit to connect the shifter? I have the throttle figured out but I can't figure out how to connect the shift cable. I looked at the pics but the don't show the cable ends. Thanks.

The first two pics are the shift connection in your refered to thread,The thumb screw you see in the first pic has a key on the opposite side.It fits into the slot on the shifter on the motor.Its round with a ear each side and fits in the shifter, its spring loaded turn it vertical push it into the slot and turn it horizontal it is then locked in.
I may not explain very well and have no pics I do have all the hardware off a 1980 7.5 johnson not the cables tho.So no pic. Some pics from you with the mount and cables might help.

Thanks. I can post pics tonight. The problem I'm having is connecting the cable end to the sleeve because the cable end is only a bare wire. I probably need another part that connects to the wire and slides into the sleeve, but I'm not sure what to order, yet.
