Evinrude 9.9 control question

Hello,
I have a 1975 Evinrude 9.9 with electric start on my 25ft sailboat. It currently has a Simplex control box connected to it. Well recently one of the cables (shift) broke and while trying to dig into the box to see what cables I need I had thought of possibly changing the control to something different.

As it is, in order to use the controls I have to lift the starboard cockpit seat which can be an inconvenience if I have several people in the boat. What would be nice is if I can convert the control to a single lever which mounts low in the aft cockpit with the lever accessible. Meanwhile the control mechanism and cables would be on the other side of the fiberglass and the control cables hidden. Also, an added advantage would be to have the electric start and engine kill be accessible on the control without having to reach over the transom.

Does anyone know if something like this is possible? Is there a control system that already exists that will work on my motor and mount/function as I described?

Thanks

Re: Evinrude 9.9 control question

Cool thanks for the links I looked at the first one already but it doesn't look like what I'm after. Basically what I'm wanting is to have the handle on one side of the fiberglass and the actual controls on the other.

The second looks like it might be what I'm after but it's hard to tell. I kinda had a feeling the electrical stuff would be fairly easy to work out. However, as for the control cables I have a question. I know the pre 1979 cables are different on the engine end but are they different or the same on the control end? In other words, if I were get a post '79 control would it be possible to connect to my motor?

Thanks

Sorry no soliciting on the forum, contact him by the PM system. TD

I don't believe anyone was soliciting. I know that was definitely NOT my intention.

TD. That's pretty similar to what I had in mind. Give something like that how much customized would need to be done?

Yes you can do this and Morse, or someone else, probably makes just what you need.

Also, whether you need Type 400 cables or Type 479 cables is a function of the control unit, not the year of the motor!!!! Chances are, if you buy a new control unit that is surface mounted, you are going to need Type 479 cables, not Type 400, which are the "pre 1979 type."

Ok So then how would I know whether the cables will fit the motor?

Sorry, I'm pretty much an outboard newb. I've only ever owned 1 other and it was a Merc 175 that never needed much maintenance.
