My 9.9 will start with the pull.
It will start with the key/electric start AFTER I run the engine at high RPMs for a few minutes, but will only start for a short time.... as if it is allowing it to accept the charge to the bendix/starter.... but only for a short time (2 minutes appx)

I can also engage the starter when the motor is running... but with a short delay from the time I turn the key until the starter engages...

I have changed batteries, and checked the main wiring connections but with no success

Any help is appreciated

Thanks in advance

Ill assume nothing happens at all when you try to start.
Maybe the safety switch is touchy or bad.
Vibrations help it make contact. then when it sits it opens.Could be an adjustment or replacement.
You really should have a rep. manual they usually have a diagram and a procedure to check the starter circuit.
Manual will save you time,agravation,frustration
and money.
Try the library,The tab at the top of the page,
Amazon.com,NAPA,Ebay,etc.

Well, from your description it sounds for all the world like a weak battery -- as JB suggests. The first step would be to start with a battery you know to be fully charged. If you eliminate the battery, and if you are sure all of the wiring connections are clean (really clean) and tight, you can try bypassing the solenoid switch if there is one. If the battery engages and turns normally, replace the solenoid. And if going direct to the starter from a known good battery does not fire it up, I would guess you need a starter rebuild.

can be frustrating stuff.

I have changed out the battery with a new and charged one but no success...

I will buy maunal ASAP and hope to trace problem.... I am assuming that this is not a common problem (hoped it might be)

Thank you all for the input and I will check solenoid hoping by bypassing it will engage bendix

Actually, Keeweenaw, it is a very common problem, but one needs all available info to recognise it.

With a fully charged battery and the starter engaged, take voltage measurements across every connection of large guage wire, from end to end of every large guage wire and across the solenoid and starter motor.

There should be a minimum of 10 volts across the battery and 9 volts from hot side of the starter to the block. All other connections and end to end measurements must be less than .5 volts each. All measurements must total about 12.5 volts.

Any deviation from the above signals a poor connection, bad wire, bad solenoid, bad starter or bad battery.

The odds are very good that one of the above is your problem.

Let us know what you find.

Good luck. :)

To simplify your troubleshooting, take a voltage reading at the starter while cranking. If the voltage is above 9.5v and the starter cranks slow, the starter is at fault.
If the voltage at the starter drops below 9v, check the battery voltage while cranking. If battery voltage is above 10v, and the starter voltage is below 9v, you have a cable, solenoid or connector/connection problem. If the voltage at the battery drops below 10v while cranking, the battery is at fault......

Hey thanks to all of you for the information!

I will apply all that has been suggested in the AM and hope to locate the problem by process of elimination

Once again, thank you
