Hello,
My 1988 Evinrude 9.9 has electric start and single lever remote controls of unknown make. They do not provide any facility to open the throttle when in neutral. I understand the idling adjustment knob is a mixture control, but can see any idling speed adjustment. Is there one?
It is tempting to make up something that will pull on the cam roller arm to enable me to open the throttle a little when in neutral, to assist starting if necessary.
Any comments, please?
John.

Most controls do provide a feature to open throttle in nuetral. ---Post picture of this control unit.

^^yes, look for a button that is pulled out for neutral warmup, or possibly the lever itself (grasp the base and pull out). I have a unit from a Tracker model that I use for an '83 9.9, and it is the latter type (a little bizarre in my view, but that's how it works).

If it is a Morse control like mine yu pull the handle out while it in the neutral position.

Isn't there a stopper on the gear shifter next to the carburetor that severely limits the carburetor from opening up in neutral? I have that on my 1979 9.9.
you have to be either in forward or reverse to be able to accelerate but you only get very little in neutral.

If this motor is going to be lifted off and stowed for the season, could/would disconnect the cables at the engine then run it out/fresh water flush it. You will be able to use the twist grip for fast idle (can't start in gear because of the neutral safety switch, and can't advance throttle beyond high idle while in neutral because of the interlock rolmops describes.)

can't quite get a handle on what you are doing -- had the idea a third party was pulling the motor or motor and tender, and storing it. But if you are prepping it yourself, could do the above. Assume you haven't been operating the motor, given difficulty operating the remote shift -- maybe worth noting that the motor should start and idle fine without high idle, if properly tuned and ready. Cold starting may require temporarily setting the mixture screw slightly richer (1/8 to 1/4 turn counterclockwise). Want to avoid over revving, in any case.

pic of the remote shift box would be helpful, as indicated above.

There is definately no facility on the remote control for increasing the idle in neutral and it does normally start fine as it is. There is also no twist grip. The whole arrangement is very basic/home made/modified but does work. There is the neutral safety lock in place. I was also curious as to whether the idling control was actually an enrichment knob and from what you say it is. I guess if it continues to start OK in the winter, I will leave it as it is, Thanks everybody.
