94 Evinrude 90 hp

First time in water, and no go.

Took it home, pulled a plug, I live close to the river. No gas on the plug, no smell of fuel at all.

Fuel pump maybe. But I have never owned an outboard before.

Did I prime the fuel properly???

How do you know if the fuel line is primed??

Before you do anything check for spark the follow thes starting procedures. Step one, squeeze the bulb until it gets hard
step two, turn key to on position and push key in for an 8 count
step three, start motor.
It should fire almost immediately, you may have to bump the choke, push key in, once or twice to keep motor running until it warms up a little.

Re: Evinrude 90 wouldn't start Update

There is an electric primer solenoid valve in the engine compartment that allows fuel to bypass the carbs and run straight into the intake chamber for cold startup.Pushing in on the key energizes the solenoid.Otherwise the key switch works just like any other. Some guys find it easier to start their engines by pushing in on the key for 8 or so secs to allow more fuel to enter chamber before cranking once the fuel line bulb has been pumped up until firm.My engine starts just fine by just pushing in on the key while cranking on initial cold startup.Give it a try and let us know whether the engine fires off.

Well that is good advice.

Appreciated.

Can you overprime?? In other words, can this lead to flooding?

My oil line pump/primer gets very hard. However, my gas line primer does not get near as hard, squeezes then takes time to re-inflate.

I know, I don't have a clue yet do I???

One other thing I failed to mention riden. The key has to be in the "on" position in order for it to energize the primer solenoid when pushed in.

Ha

I figured that much. But right now I guess I deserve to be treated like a dummy, don't worry about it.

no dummies here Riden....lurk and learn as I do and you'll be surprise how much of the wealth of information sticks on your hard disk! Before you know you'll be giving advice instead of asking :D

To further insult your intelligence riden :D ,you can ear test to insure the solenoid is activating by having the key in the "on" position and intermittedly pushing in on it while listening for the click from the solenoid. To confuse the topic even moreso, there is also a manually operated red lever on the side of the solenoid valve that can be used in the event that the electric solenoid fails. The normal "run position for this red lever is turned all the way clockwise.Of course opening manually would be counterclockwise.

#1 I couldn't understand why I could hear the choke??

#2 I remember playing with that valve and wondering what it is and then after playing with it, being unsure where it should be set.

I'll make sure it is clockwise.

Thanks guys

My motor starts like ob's just by priming while cranking, but the holding for 8 seconds before cranking is a good place to start until you find out what your motor likes.

Well I think I have the trouble.

#1 I didn't do this. Previous owner set it up.

I noticed looking at the fuel line it is backwards, the arrow of fuel direction points to the tank.

Common sense is telling me I have one big vacuum in my fuel line and not a drop of gas.

Are you refering to the fuel primer bulb being installed backwards?

Well ,that will most definately cause fuel flow issues.Once you recitify the fuel bulb ,be sure and update us on whether your starting issue is remedied.

Re: Evinrude 90 wouldn't start Update

Took the boat out last night, started right up no troubles. Ran great all night, no troubles.

I thought the motor sounded great.

I know this isn't the prop section, but it was running at 6500 rpms with a 19 pitch prop. Is that high??? I am thinking it is.
